Call for council leader to stand down

Date published: 24 April 2013

Following the report on Rochdale Online regarding the writ served on RMBC leader, Cllr Colin Lambert, UKIP's Rochdale branch is calling for the resignation of the council leader.

Acting branch chairman; Warren Mitchell says: "Given the appalling handling of the child grooming case this latest legal case proves, yet again, that Councillor Lambert is unfit to hold the office of council leader or to represent citizens and local enterprise in the borough.

“His tactless remarks have caused financial to two well regarded local residential care providers.

“Whilst there is no doubt that a number of professional bodies within the borough (not least the Council's own Social Services Department), should be properly investigated for their mishandling of the child abuse scandal and their over-arching duty of care to all children under their jurisdiction, for Councillor Lambert to cast aspersions on all child care provision within Rochdale shows an immature lack of consideration for these two highly regarded providers.

“Councillor Lambert has proven his lack of belief in these organisations with this throwaway remark, on the back of which he has caused thousands of pounds of lost revenue to these two businesses in particular, with the concomitant risk of employee security which may, in turn, only add to the economic misery his ramshackle administration has heaped on our citizens.

“We urge the councillor to do the honourable thing and step down with immediate effect."
