Make a wish in Norden

Date published: 24 April 2013

Hopwood Hall College has been commissioned by Rochdale Council to create a wishing tree sculpture for Norden Village. The decorative tree, which will enable residents and visitors to hang dedications and messages, is due to take centre stage at the bus terminus park area later this year.

Work on the project has started at the College. Artist, sculptor and ex Hopwood Hall College tutor Garry Lavin is leading the overall design and a group of second year fine art students are working on the decorative elements.

The 12 students have been set a challenge to each design a ceramic mosaic tile depicting scenes of Rochdale in the style of the Spanish architect Antoni Gaudi. The students have been experimenting with new glazing techniques on white earthenware which produces very bright colours – reminiscent of Gaudi’s colourful mosaic sculptures and buildings in and around Barcelona.

It is planned that the sculpture will be approximately 5ft in diameter and feature a mirror finish stainless steel fret cut tree at its centre, set on a stepped base featuring the students’ work inspired by the people, buildings and history of Rochdale.

Mike Simpson, Programme Manager Arts & Performing Arts, commented on the students working on a commissioned job saying: “The stakes are higher for the students with a commission and there’s less room for error. It’s a great experience for them as it’s like working in the real world – strict guidelines, timescales to adhere to and a client to satisfy. The students are aware that their tile may not make the cut – they have to pull out all the stops and ensure they fulfil the brief.”

The seed of the idea for the tree was planted last year by Valery White, the Township Management Officer at Rochdale Borough Council, and Councillor Ann Metcalfe. Councillor Metcalfe who died recently; the Norden wishing tree will be dedicated to her memory.
