Police target speeding motorists across Greater Manchester

Speeding motorists are being targeted by police across Greater Manchester as part of a national campaign this week.

The work, which began on Monday and runs until the end of Sunday, is part of Operation Dice, GMP’s initiative to make the region’s roads safer after 49 people died on them in 2012.

There were also nearly 6,200 casualties resulting from road accidents last year.

Traffic officers are maintaining a high-profile presence on high-speed roads and at collision hotspots and other sites of concern, and are using speed detection cameras at static check points as well as during vehicle patrols.

Motorists stopped will either be prosecuted or given the chance of attending a speed-awareness course.

Inspector John Armfield of GMP’s Traffic Network Section said: “Speeding motorists are not unique to Greater Manchester, but we are absolutely committed to dealing with them to make our roads safer.

“Excessive speed is a factor in a third of fatal road accidents, and the greater the speed, the more severe are people’s injuries. To reassure road users, we will be continuing this intensive work throughout the spring and summer months to ensure that all motorists comply with speed limits.”
