Date published: 17 April 2013

One local student will find out what it’s like to be Mayor this summer, after winning a ‘Mayor for the Day’ competition.

Ramsha Azmat, 15 from Rochdale was chosen from all the entries to take up the role for a day in July.

The Matthew Moss High School pupil is already looking forward to becoming the borough’s first citizen. She visited the town hall this week to meet officials and start preparations for her day in the spotlight.

Ramsha was delighted on hearing she had won the competition: “I got an email confirming I’d won. It was a quite an amazing thing to be told. I thought it sounded like a good day and it would be great experience, so it was something I wanted to do, but I never thought I’d be picked ahead of everyone else.”

Ramsha, leaves school this summer and is planning to do A-Levels in law, politics, art or business studies, but in the meantime has been busy researching the role of a Mayor in readiness for her big day.

The teenager added: “I’m sure it will be something I will treasure for a long time and I’m going to be very proud. I’m really passionate about Rochdale, it has a great community, a real positive spirit and it’s good to see all the investment that is going on at the moment.”

Ramsha, who would eventually like to become either a solicitor or an artist will be unveiled to the media and public at a full council meeting in July before taking up the role.

As part of her duties, she will be escorted to that days engagements in the Mayoral car, accompanied by Councillor Peter Rush who has promised to provide some helpful tips. She will meet people in the community and generally get a taste of what it’s like to be Mayor.
