Real change for real nappies

Date published: 14 April 2013

It’s Real Nappy week from the 15 -21 April and there is lots of useful advice available to help you make the choice. Disposable nappies can cost, on average, £600 from birth to potty, compared to £160 for a basic real nappies birth to potty kit, which could save parents up to £500!

The myth that real nappies are difficult to use is fading fast. Real nappies are the natural, washable and re-usable alternative to disposable nappies and there are plenty to choose from.

Over 164 million disposable nappies are being thrown away in Greater Manchester every year and each one takes hundreds of years to rot away in landfill! So the change to real nappies makes perfect sense. They are comfortable, dry, with a cushioned bottom and result in overall cost savings, which all makes for a happy parent!

Councillor Neil Swannick, Chairman of Greater Manchester Waste Disposal Authority said: “We would like to encourage parents to choose real nappies to help them to save money and also reduce the amount of disposable nappies that are thrown away. We are always looking at ways to reduce waste in Greater Manchester to support our aim of zero waste and the events will not only help to raise awareness of the benefits, but also inform parents how to use them and alleviate any difficulties they may have.

"Come and join our local real nappy expert at Nappuccino events throughout Greater Manchester, who will talk you through how to choose, use and care for your nappies and answer all your questions. Keep an eye out on our events page where details on where they will be happening will be added in May."
