Safety first for students

Date published: 26 March 2013

Hopwood Hall College held a ‘Stay Safe Week’ for students with a series of activities and workshops organised across the College’s campuses, encompassing all aspects of personal safety.

The programme aimed to help students understand the importance of all types of safety – physical, mental, emotional and spiritual and included plenty of activities, workshops, presentations and fitness sessions.

The week included a ‘Drive2Live’ day where students viewed a short play about drinking and drugs and the consequences of these actions and watched simulated car crashes, in which the local fire service took part. Students also got to hear from bereavement counsellors and crash victims and were given the chance to test their own driving abilities, including testing their reaction times. Additionally, there was a session run by the police, helping students to understand what a crime is as well as a self defence session and a hula hoop class run by Ladies Only Gym.

The events were all well received by College students, who felt that the week helped them understand better the implications of drinking and driving and provided them with the knowledge on how to deal with a range of safety issues in the future. Many students commented on how much they enjoyed ‘Stay Safe Week’ and how much they had learned from it.

In addition the College was proud to work with other organisations such as the Samaritans, NHS, Victim Support, Early Break, Rochdale Metropolitan Borough Council, and Northern Rail which all had stalls at the College throughout ‘Stay Safe Week’.
