More tax payers money flushed down the loo!

Date published: 26 March 2013

Rochdale council is to spend more tax payers money on the new £50million office, Number One Riverside, due to being forced to scrap unisex loos following a string of complaints from employees.

The council has now agreed to put in separate male and female toilets.

The decision to install unisex toilets has been criticised locally, Lawrence Glendinning said: "All this could have been avoided if seperate toilets were built in the first place instead of unisex toilets."

Mr Glendinning says the Council has treated the residents of Rochdale with "utter contempt" by spending £50m on the new offices "considering the almost empty coffers of RMBC".

However, the Council has been defended by Jez Parton who said "the council is listening to staff."

Helen Harrison, Unison's Rochdale branch secretary, said: "People do have different views on it but there are a number of people who are upset about the unisex issue."

It is understood the change will not be made until the building is fully occupied and a full review is completed to determine male and female staffing ratios per floor. The toilets will then be separated into male and female use based on these ratios.
