World Book Day & ‘Kindle Corner’

Date published: 25 March 2013

Students at Oulder Hill Community School have been enthusiastically telling classmates about their favourite book to mark World Book Day. They developed their speaking and listening skills by giving talks about their favourite read to other students. 30 of them were awarded a book token in assembly for their outstanding efforts.

Year 10 students, Zeshan Amjad, Grace Brown, Greg Horton and Eve Walton, talked in assemblies about their favourite books and in doing so encouraged other students to pick up a book.

Staff were also keen to get in on the act. They chose their favourite read and these were shared and displayed across Oulder Hill Community School. In addition, staff joined students by taking part in D.E.A.R. (drop everything and read); students enjoyed this so much that they want it to be a regular occurrence.

The whole school is now excited by and is benefiting from ‘Kindle Corner’, a new initiative that was launched on World Book Day. Students were invited to the launch in the Learning Resource Centre where they enjoyed getting to grips with the new Kindles that sit alongside the well-stocked library and computer suite.

Headteacher, John Watson said: “Many events have taken place over the week to celebrate World Book Day and all have proved very successful - especially students and staff enjoying talking together and sharing their experiences of a wide range of books.”

He continued: “This is another example of how the staff at Oulder Hill are continually striving to develop students’ skills and interests and love of reading and learning.”
