Borough’s architectural gems to go on display

Date published: 25 March 2013

Buildings across the borough who want to show off their unique architecture are being invited to find out more about how they can take part in this year’s Heritage Open Days.

Heritage Open Days, to be held 12-15 September, is a national event celebrating England’s architecture and culture by offering free access to buildings that are usually closed to the public or charge admission.

Last year’s event was a huge success with a record breaking 2500 visitors coming to enjoy our borough’s stunning heritage offer.

Big draws included the Yelloways Motor Coach museum, an original 1970s Yelloways coach packed full of memorabilia from the coaching holiday era, which attracted television and radio coverage, as well as 260 visitors, when it rolled onto The Butts in Rochdale town centre.

Familiar favourites included the Regal Moon, the Town Hall and the St Chad’s Church also proved popular.

In Middleton, St Leonard’s Parish Church and the Old Grammar school drew crowds, while in Heywood, visitors enjoyed the Victorian Gothic splendour of the Grade II Listed St Luke’s Church in York Street. In the Pennines, the Littleborough Coach house was a winning attraction.

Heritage Open Days is organised by volunteers and supported by Rochdale Council, Link4Life and the Heritage Open Days National Partnership. Details of local buildings taking part this year will be announced in June.
