Date published: 13 March 2013

Up and coming young sporting stars from across Rochdale are set to take part in the Greater Manchester Summer Games on 19 March.

More than 1,800 school pupils will compete in a wide range of sports, including Athletics, Netball, Goalball and Football, at a number of Manchester’s world class sporting facilities, including The National Cycling Centre and Indoor Athletics Arena.

Rochdale schools who have qualified for the Greater Manchester Sainsbury’s School Games include:

  • Athletics: Norden Community and St Patricks RC
  • Mini Basketball: St Vincents RC
  • Gymnastics: Kentmere, Beech House and Norden Community
  • Hockey: Caldershaw
  • Lacrosse: Holy Trinity CE and Norden Community
  • New Age Kurling: Redwood
  • Rugby Union: St James CE, Holy Family RC and Redwood
  • Table Tennis: Oulder Hill and St Cuthberts RC
  • Volleyball: Siddal Moor Sports College, St Cuthberts RC and Falinge Park
  • Water Polo: Cardinal Langley RC

The festival is one of more than 60 regional Sainsbury’s School Games taking place across the country this summer to encourage more young people to participate in competitive school sport.

The School Games is set across four levels and is backed by National Lottery funding through Sport England.

It is fully inclusive and will increase the opportunities for young people to take part in sport across the school year.

The School Games uses the inspiration of London’s Olympics and Paralympics to transform competitive sport in schools and get more people playing sport.
A full list of competing schools will be released nearer the time of the event.

Mancunian trio Platnum will be performing at the Opening Ceremony.

Richard Saunders, CEO of GreaterSport, part of the organising committee for the games commented: “We have schools from across all 10 boroughs of Greater Manchester coming together to make the Greater Manchester School Games one of the largest in the country.

"We are hoping to capture the excitement that the young people of Greater Manchester had throughout the Olympics last year and hopefully witness some stars of the future taking part.”
