Beech House School - Sport, Public Speaking and Science News

Date published: 12 March 2013

Beech House School entertained Hipperholme Grammar School from Halifax for a football match. Beech House dominated play from the start, again.

Conor Leyland and Dan Tahir were outstanding and Jacob Hill proved to be a thorn in the Yorkshire Grammar School’s side all afternoon. Goals from Harrison Groome, an outstanding free kick from Captain Jacob Wright and Max Atkins were the difference in a game that Beech House dominated throughout.

Man of the match for Beech House was Kingsley Benson who worked the right flank all afternoon. We thank Hipperholme Grammar School for making the journey over and continuing the excellent relationship we have with the school.

The under 12’s Athletics team took part in an indoor event at Kingsway Park School. They competed in a range of activities including standing long jump and triple jump, shot putt and relays. The boys finished 4th in their event, whilst the girls were placed fifth.

The year 9 Rugby team played in a tournament at Matthew Moss. For many of the boys this was their first experience of competitive rugby. In the first game against Matthew Moss they dominated for long periods and won the game 5-1. Their second and third games were much closer affairs with both teams trading scores. They drew 2-2 with St Annes and 3-3 with Siddal Moor. Player of the day was Jack Cryer.

The Intermediate and Senior Teams took part in the Rotary Club District Finals for Public Speaking at the Forest Hills Hotel in Frodsham. Having qualified as winners from the first round with ease, this proved to be a much tougher event. However, the Seniors performed competently enough to finish in second place and will now go to the Regional Finals in Preston later this month. In the Intermediate section Max Atkins was awarded a Highly Commended Certificate for Best Speaker.

Last week it was the annual North West Skills event held again at Event City Trafford. Both Year 10 and 11 attended. All pupils got an insight into further education and careers. Many had a go at rowing and climbing. Some even had a new hair do at John Michael!

Years 1 to 6 attended Project Save Earth presented by Year 9D together with the Science Museum London and the Museum of Science and Industry Manchester as part of this year’s outreach project. It was an afternoon event held in the Sports Hall. The pupils all learnt about endangered species and climate change, including food miles. They all had a really good time and took home a British apple to encourage locally produced food.

Year 10L went to Liverpool University for the Rotary Clubs Annual ‘Excitement of Science’ Lecture. This year it was given by Dr. Andrew Newsam and was called 'Exploring the Dynamic Universe.' Astrophysics is not everyone's cup of tea but the pupils took to it straight away as they were immediately looking for asteroids in pictures taken of the Universe. In light of the recent asteroid hitting Russia it was very interesting and captivating. He went on to explain the new technology happening in the world and how the North West are leading the world at the moment. Inspiration and enthusiasm was had by all at the end.

Our accomplished poet, Anusia Battersby (Year 11) has again had a poem published by Young Writers entitled ‘Winter Wonders’. Young poets were invited to submit a poem on the theme of winter and the festive season. Her work will be published in ‘Winter Wonders – Seasonal Spirit’ and a copy of the book will be sent to the British Library along with libraries across the UK. A copy of her work appears on the school web site. Well done again, Anusia!

The House Point totals are: Jupiter 72, Saturn 71, Neptune 49 and Mercury 38.

Form of the week is Year 4.

Pupil of the Week certificates go to: Year 6, Gareth Tatterrsall
