Chatterbox children throw tea party for charity

Date published: 09 March 2013

Talking in class and not wearing school uniform normally earns a trip to the headteacher’s office but for Castleton Primary School pupils on Friday (8 March) it was encouraged as they held a charity tea party.

Year one and two pupils wore Alice in Wonderland-themed fancy dress for the Mad Chatters tea party in the school hall for children’s communication charity ICAN.

Parents were invited for juice and cakes and watched the children perform nursery rhymes and tell jokes before a collection was held.

Teacher Barry Cook said: “ICAN does great work supporting children with speech and communication difficulties and it is really important today that we can all communicate with each other well.”

Teachers also got into the spirit of fancy dress, dressing as the Mad Hatter, the Queen of Hearts, white rabbits and Tweedle Dum and Tweedle Dee among others.

Jacob Redfern, seven, said: “It’s been fun to dress up and see all of his friends and teachers in fancy dress too.”

Over one million children in the UK have communication difficulties and ICAN holds ‘Chatterbox Challenges’ every year to raise money and awareness of this.

They hope to raise more than £60,000 from the Mad Chatters tea parties taking place across the country.
