Year 11 pupil addresses regional conference!

Date published: 05 March 2013

We are delighted to inform you that Gary Oliver, Year 11 student, was selected to make the opening address at a Greater Manchester Schools Sports conference on Wednesday at Media City.

The large audience was made up of headteachers from across Greater Manchester, members of the business community, the media, Baroness Sue Campbell and paralympian athlete Claire Cashmore.

Gary spoke with passion on how sport has developed his confidence and encourages him to always try his personal best in everything he does. A great ambassador for Redwood School! Well done Gary, we are all very proud of your achievements.

Parent Governor vacancy

Redwood continues to strive for excellence and the role of parents / carers is vital in this development. The opportunity to find out more and contribute to the running of the school is just one small aspect of the role of a governor. Please give this some thought prior to me writing to you next week. Many thanks!

Media coverage – food issues

You will be aware of the recent media coverage with regard to certain meat products and particularly burgers. The catering aspect of Grosvenor House Limited, who run our catering service in school, have informed me that burgers have been replaced by quiche on the menu with immediate effect.

After School Clubs & Youth Clubs

All clubs started again following the half term break. Applications are now being taken for the Easter holiday club programme. For a full list of the clubs and to see the recently produced clubs brochure, please visit www.redwood-school.com

Pupil Hairstyles

We would like to remind parents / carers that certain `shaved’ hairstyles are not permitted in school. Although we encourage pupil individual choice, hairstyles which have letters or `tramlines shaved’ into the haircut are not part of the uniform code. Thank you for your support with this.

6th form news

In Citizenship this term the group are studying “The Global Community” and will be ‘visiting’ several different countries virtually. They have visited Malawi and looked at how there are some rich tourist areas and also very poor farming communities. Students identified fruits that the farmers grow and everyone had a go at tasting the lemons, limes and mango. Most students preferred the mango but Brandon liked the lemon best!

Well done to Declan, Aiden and Tom who have been practicing their highway code with Saj. Everyone has worked really hard especially Aiden who took an online theory test just before the half term and scored an impressive 27 out of 30. Well done lads!

In Motor Vehicles this term Nathan S, Rebecca, Declan, Jake and Jordan have been learning about maintaining vehicles. The group have already gained excellent knowledge on motor vehicles that they could be doing M.O.T tests for 6th form staff!

The group have been learning about health and safety and learning the correct personal protective equipment to use during the session. The students have also started a mini enterprise washing staff cars to help raise money for their end of year trip to Alton Towers. So far the little business is doing well.

Michael said: “The group are really hard working and enthusiastic about motors. They provide an excellent value for money service, so if there any staff who haven't tried our service yet and would like the group to wash and valet their car, for a small sum, please get in touch”.

The Rebound Therapy group has been excellent this term. Students have been developing a variety of different skills depending on ability. Skills have included learning how to kneel and stand on the trampoline, to more complex actions such as star jumps, seat drops and tuck jumps. Everyone has had lots of fun, gaining confidence in movement and developing their fitness.
