Crime commissioner praises borough
Date published: 03 March 2013
Greater Manchester’s new Police and Crime Commissioner praised a ten per cent drop in overall crime in the borough this year at the full council meeting.
Tony Lloyd highlighted the good news as he outlined his plans for his term in office in front of councillors and members of the public.
Mr Lloyd was elected to his role as Greater Manchester’s first Police and Crime Commissioner last November. His role is to set the priorities for Greater Manchester Police and hire its Chief Constable.
During his speech Mr Lloyd highlighted the importance of the police and council working together to keep people safe and the role of the Police Community Support Officers (PCSOs).
He then answered questions from members on a range of issues including changes to the neighbourhood policing model in Rochdale and the importance of tackling domestic violence.
Mr Lloyd also highlighted the importance of local democracy saying: “The role of councillors is fundamental to the working of democracy. It matters enormously.”
