Date published: 28 February 2013

Metrolink services to Rochdale have opened
The Rochdale extension of Greater Manchester's Metrolink tram network has opened today.
The first in-service tram from Rochdale Railway Station left at 5.59am, while the first tram to Rochdale left Manchester Victoria at 5.08am - services run every 12 minutes.
The 4.6 mile (7.4km) expansion of the Oldham and Shaw line currently terminates at Rochdale Railway Station, with ongoing work it will reach the town centre by 2014.
Stops between Rochdale and Shaw are at Newhey, Milnrow, Kingsway Business Park and Newbold.
More than 200 park-and-ride spaces are also be available to passengers travelling on Metrolink and heavy rail services from Rochdale.
Tickets from Rochdale Railway Station to Shaw & Crompton, and all stops between, cost £1.80 for a peak ‘anytime’ single and £2.60 for a peak ‘anytime’ return.
A range of weekly, four-weekly, quarterly and annual season tickets is available.
The line was due to open in 2012, but was delayed due to problems with a tram management system.
The leader of Rochdale Council, Colin Lambert, is quoted as saying the tram's arrival in the town is "a major boost to the local economy". However, many locals fear the tram will lead to a further exodus of shoppers away from the town to Manchester.
