Primary Reading Day

Date published: 26 February 2013

Year 9 learners from Matthew Moss High School hosted a special Primary Reading Day for Year 5 and 6 pupils from four different primary schools in the area recently to encourage and promote a love of reading and books.

The event, organised wholly by an entire English class saw pupils entertained by Dr Who novelist Daniel Blythe, search the school for reading clues in a special Treasure Hunt and given the chance to design their own novel and front cover.

At the end of the day, each pupil and organiser was given a free book voucher to spend in the Madeleine Lindley Ltd bookshop which had set up shop in the hall for the event.

Prizes, which included bookmarks, pens and even a few sets of David Walliams books, were also given out to pupils who had really impressed during the activities.

Peter, a year 9 learner at the school who had helped organise the treasure hunt activity was pleased with how they day had gone: “There has been a lot of communication and helping each other on how they do things.”

But what did the younger pupils think? “I’ve had a really good day and I really like the school,” enthused Castleton Primary pupil Curtis, reflecting the positive response of those taking part.

Of course it wasn’t just the pupils who thought it had been a great day. Mrs Cadogan from St Edwards Primary thought that the event had been very worthwhile: “I’m really pleased by the way they have become excited by books. It’s just been a thoroughly interesting and exciting experience for them.”
