Local clinical leaders get the green light

Date published: 26 February 2013

NHS Heywood, Middleton and Rochdale Clinical Commissioning Group (NHS HMR CCG) have announced that they have been authorised, ready to take on their statutory role of commissioning health services for the local residents of Rochdale borough from April 2013.

Clinical commissioning enables GPs as clinical leaders and other local health professionals to respond, innovate and develop health services in the way that best meets the needs and wishes of local people.

Lesley Mort, NHS HMR CCG Chief Officer said: “I am delighted we have now been formally authorised, following the hard work that everyone has contributed to help us achieve this and our statutory role from April 2013. The move of health commissioning from our Primary Care Trust to the CCG is being carefully managed to ensure continuity of services and a smooth transition into the new system.

HMR Clinical Commissioning Group will focus on delivering improved clinical outcomes, patient safety, quality, innovation, public participation and patient experience that will bring real benefits to patients and the public in Rochdale borough”.

Dr Chris Duffy, NHS HMR CCG Chair and local GP said: “I would like to thank everyone who has been involved in gaining authorisation for our local commissioning group. This has been achieved through empowering clinical leaders at every level of the NHS - through CCGs, members, networks, partners and providers of healthcare. GPs and others within CCGs are best placed to work with people locally to decide which health services should be commissioned and provided to meet the needs of their local populations.

Authorisation is the start of an ongoing developmental and assurance process to ensure that the new clinical commissioning groups will help deliver high quality health services and better health outcomes for our local communities”.
