Inaugural Rochdale sci-fi convention

Date published: 23 February 2013

Sci-fi fanatics converged on Rochdale’s Wheatsheaf Shopping Centre for the inaugural Dale-Con convention this weekend.

Organised by self-confessed science fiction nut Martin Ballard, Wheatsheaf Shopping Centre manager, the event saw several notable actors attend for question and answer sessions.

Popular convention speakers Paul Markham and Pam Rose were joined by Richard LeParmentier - famous for playing Admiral Motti in Star Wars Episode IV.

Red Dwarf star, and current Coronation Street actor, Craig Charles attended on the Saturday as all the actors hosted Q&A sessions for fans.

There was also a prize for best costume on each day with the winner bagging £50 worth of Wheatsheaf vouchers.

A school ‘Design a Sci-Fi Character’ competition was also run, with the winners announced on the Friday and their designs brought to life by illustrator Joe Matthews the following evening.

Star Wars, Doctor Who and other popular collectors’ displays and props were also on show in the shopping centre for guests to enjoy.
