Magazine shoot for Wardle cake maker

Date published: 21 February 2013

Barbara Corbett, a self taught home baker has won two national competitions in the last year, "Queen of Cakes" and Easy Living Magazine.

The expert panel of judges, including Fiona Cairns (baker of Kate and William's royal wedding cake), Eric Lanlard (of Channel 4's Baking Mad) and Easy Living's Food Editor David Herbert chose Barbara's floral twist on the Simple Vanilla Cake recipe which wowed the judges.

Barbara's prize is a photo shoot in Easy Living's London kitchen, where she will recreate her cake step-by-step to be featured on the site. She will also have a swish afternoon tea along with baking goodies galore.

She says: “I always made my children’s birthday cakes and enjoyed every minute. I love making and creating cakes for your special occasion and being set a challenge.”

“I entered Dorothy Perkins "Queen of Cakes" competition as I saw it on Facebook and that led me to a link for Strawberry Teas for Breast Cancer Care.

Two weeks later I held a tea party and raised £165 from donations from friends.

“I was awarded the Dorothy Perkins "Queen of Cakes" crown for Breast Cancer and won two days for myself and a friend at Champneys.

“I've now been lucky enough to win another national competition run by Easy Living Magazine!

“Not bad for a self taught cake baker!”

“I'm going to London on Friday (22 February) to enjoy my prize - a photo shoot of me baking a cake and afternoon tea provided by Eric Lanlard, master patissier, at the Jumeirah Carlton Tower, London.

“I am feeling a little nervous about the photo shoot, but am looking forward to the afternoon tea.”
