Date published: 20 February 2013

21 girls aged between 10-14 years from 21st Rochdale Guides have shown they are leading the way after completing their First Aid badge.

The girls had to complete a series of activities in order to earn the badge, including how to assess an emergency situation, use of CPR & what to do in other first aid scenarios e.g. shock, bleeding, fractures, seizures & burns. By the end of the day, all of the girls that they would know what to do & be able to use their skills should they encounter a situation where a person needed their help & assistance.

The girls were presented with their badges & Heartstart certificates by their leaders at their local activity centre on Monday 18 February 2013.

The badge day had been organised in conjunction with the British Heart Foundation “Heartstart Emergency Life Support Skills” course delivered by Rachel Massey, paramedic from North West Ambulance Service & local Heartstart Community Champion. Rachel herself had been a guide & had achieved this badge too when she was a member.

Ella Clegg 13 years said: “I’ve learnt live saving skills today”; Laura Greenwood 16 years said: “I have learnt skills today that everybody should learn how to use”, & Izzy Whiteley 11 years said: “I didn’t know what to do in an emergency before today, but I do now."

The badges available to Guides offer a wide range of exciting opportunities and adventures to girls aged between 10 & 14, from Camper to Outdoor Pursuits, to Cook and Independent Living.
