Enterprising students make money for charity

Date published: 19 February 2013

Budding Alan Sugars and Karren Bradys at Hopwood Hall College had an opportunity to show off their entrepreneurial skills and raise money for charity last week.

Students took part in the College’s yearly ‘Enterprise Week’, which is a week packed full of events and entrepreneurial activities; all students had a chance to learn about funding and setting up a business and many also decided to take part in the Enterprise Week Competition.

The competition offered the budding entrepreneurs the chance to raise money for charity. In order to take part, all they had to do was form a group or two of more and apply for a £10 ‘start-up fund’.
Then, it was left up to them to decide how to make the most money for charity.

Prior to the week, a vote was held amongst students and it was decided that all proceeds would go to Cancer Research UK.

The mini businesses run by the students included:

a) Art and Performing Arts students created multi-coloured ribbons for every cancer of the body (Cancer Research UK uses pink ribbons).

b) Early Years students held a raffle.

c) Health and Social Care students baked and sold cakes and did henna art on customers’ hands.

d) Catering students made and sold cakes and did a raffle, too.

In addition to the competitions, students could attend free sessions provided by a wide variety of local and national businesses including: Blue Orchid, Barclays, Avon, Princes Trust and Out of Africa. Topics of the sessions included ‘Introduction to setting up a business’ and ‘Funding and support for your business’.

Other local businesses also took part, for example a big pink and white cake was generously donated by SuesCupCakery in Heywood.

Karen Mackle, Lead Student Support Tutor & Designated Safeguarding Officer, whose team was responsible for organising the day, said: “We had a fantastic array of stalls selling and raffling a wide variety of items, as well as offering some great services. Early estimates have the total raised at over £450 for Cancer Research UK!

“The students were a credit to the College and gave our visiting stall holders a wonderful impression of Hopwood Hall College.”
