Heywood house is first for innovative refurb

Date published: 18 February 2013

An innovative housing partnership that sees old, empty homes brought back into use through work carried out by local trainees has completed its first property, at Banff Grove in Heywood.

Four unemployed trainees started work on the property in October 2012 with a further four trainees working together to totally renovate the building. Work completed at the house included re-plastering, wiring, decorating and landscaping. Whilst carrying out the refurbishment work the trainees have gained a Level 1 Building Craft Occupations qualification, their CSCS cards and valuable work experience.

John Marsland, aged 23 and from Castleton, is one of the trainees who has taken part in the scheme. John commented: “The course has helped me learn new trades and given me the chance to do hands on work. Never give up on learning new things.”

Across Rochdale Borough there are currently around 3,700 empty homes, many of which are falling into a state of disrepair. With an increase in the level of homelessness and house building at an all-time low, this programme aims to increase affordable housing within the borough.

Andrew Toft, RBH Director of Services for Neighbourhoods, said: “This is a great example of partnership working which not only brings empty properties back into use but also provides valuable training opportunities for young people across the Borough. I’m delighted that this innovative project is increasing the availability of high-quality affordable homes in the local area.”

Teresa Jennings, Operations Director at Groundwork Oldham & Rochdale, added: “This is the first of 15 properties we will be working on. All the properties will be let to local people on an affordable rent basis. We will be working with up to 64 local unemployed people who will be supported in gaining new skills coupled with on the job experience, making it easier for them to find employment. This is a genuine local partnership approach seeing all partners pulling together for the greater good of Rochdale.”
