Suspended sentence for nurse

The nurse whose botched circumcision of a a Rochdale-born three-week old baby led to his death walked out of court with a suspended sentence.

Grace Adeleye, of Salford, was found guilty of the manslaughter of three-and-a-half week old Goodluck Caubergs, who bled to death after the operation at his home in April, 2010.

Adeleye has been sentenced to 21 months jail, suspended for two years.

Goodluck’s parents had employed Adeleye - a qualified nurse in Nigeria - to carry out the delicate procedure after she was recommended by a friend.

She used a pair of scissors then cleaned and bandaged the baby’s penis and was paid £100.

Goodluck’s parents changed the baby’s nappy several hours later and noticed a large amount of blood and called the nurse for advice. She told them to re-dress the injury but the problem didn’t improve.

Goodluck was taken to the Royal Oldham Hospital by ambulance the next morning and died a short time later.

The pathologist who carried out the post-mortem examination concluded the baby had bled to death.

Det Insp Darren Meeks, from Oldham’s Public Protection Investigation Unit, said: “This is a heart-breaking case. Although Adeleye was a registered nurse, she carried out the surgery using a historic, crude and dangerous method and failed to give the parents the correct advice.

“Goodluck’s parents have understandably been left devastated by their loss.

In a statement after the sentencing, Goodluck’s parents said: “Not for one minute did we think it would cause him any harm and never did we think he would lose his life as a result.

“Our son was taken from us when he was 25 days old and the sadness we feel does not seem to ease, we have now just grown to live with the pain of our son’s death, rather than it subsiding.”
