Safety Week 2013

Date published: 12 February 2013

Each year the Eco-School Council from St John with St Michael CE Primary School in Shawforth enter into a Lancashire competition called The Chairman's Challenge, last year we came fourth winning our school £150.

They had to think of an initiative that will help the children in some way. This year’s theme they choose was "Stay Safe".

The Eco-School Council, which has been running for 7 years, has organised a whole week of fun activities based around all aspects of safety.

The main areas they looked at were Fire Safety, Water Safety, Road Safety, Stranger Danger, Internet Safety and cycling proficiency.

The first day was a "walk to school day" and we tried to encourage as many children as possible to either walk or car share.

James and Elliott from Class 4 organised a cycle safety day where they checked their friend’s bikes and also made a small cycling course in the school yard.

The Eco-School Council have invited in local police officers, ambulance drivers, first aiders and firemen - all of whom were very helpful and spent lots of time answering questions and showing us their vehicles.

The children have designed lots of fun worksheets based around each topic which they distributed to each class based on their age range/ability.

They have recorded everything they have done throughout the week in scrap books, which will be used as their evidence for the competition. It has been a really enjoyable week and the children have got so much out of it!
