Ruthless Romans at Ribchester

Date published: 09 February 2013

Class 3 from St John with St Michael CE Primary School in Shawforth are learning all about Invaders and Settlers as part of their topic work and they have been interested in particular about The Romans.

Mr Wesley Hickman organised a trip to the beautiful town of Ribchester. They set off on a cold, windy morning and arrived around 10.00am. First of all they put all their belongings in the old Village Hall, as this was where they would be eating lunch. They then visited Partrick, the curator of Ribchester Museum, to talk about Roman artefacts and ask him questions they had thought of they day before.

Shortly after that, the children got to try on Roman armour, hold replica shields and wield a replica short sword which was called a Gladius. Harvey, 8, really enjoyed holding the shield and sword he said: "It was really, really heavy, I think the Roman soldiers must have been very strong!"

Later that day after everyone had ate lunch; the children went to look around the Museum and drew sketches of the items in there. They also looked at the ruins of the Roman granaries.

Before they set off back to Shawforth, the children got to play on Ribchester Park, which they thoroughly enjoyed, they pretended the climbing frames were Roman forts and the Celts were attacking them.
