Surfing safely

Date published: 08 February 2013

Young people from Hopwood Hall College learnt how to surf the waves of the net safely by taking part in Safer Internet Day on Tuesday.

The national initiative is coordinated by an organisation called the UK Safer Internet Centre and is co-funded by the European Commission. It runs the event each year and 2013 was special as it marked its tenth anniversary.

The theme for Safer Internet Day 2013 was Online Rights and Responsibilities with the slogan “Connect with Respect”.

Karen Mackle, Lead Student Support Tutor & Duty Safeguarding Officer arranged for the College’s students to participate in the day.

The College arranged sessions on the day to promote safer internet use; videos were shown to the students and they also took part in an online survey which will be used to identify how the College can best support its students to keep safe in the future.

Karen says: “As a permanent reminder of the day and its messages, we have set up a Safer Internet page on the SPLASH (the students’ intranet page); we’ve also placed posters around the College encouraging safer internet use.

“The day was really popular with students; many of them downloaded e-cards about internet safety which could be forwarded to their friends. It was great to see them get fully involved.”
