Manchester’s ‘big wheel’
Town centre manager Debbie O’Brien thinks a giant 'big wheel' is the answer to bring more people into Rochdale.
She believes the idea is realistic and would mirror the success of Manchester’s ‘big wheel’, which ran in the city centre from 2004 to last year.
It is understood the wheel could cost around £30,000.
The idea has already come in for criticism and ridicule, Lawrence Glendinning said: "April 1 already?! Utter joke. Couldn't make it up, you really couldn't."
Danny Hayee said: "That's the dumbest idea in the world. What's there to see in Rochdale besides the town hall? That's the only nice looking building, everything else is old, crap looking, being built on or just a dump. £30,000 will go to waste when it can help fund better things such as youth centres and other beneficial things for the Town. There's a reason we're broke, that's one of them."
Last month Rochdale Online revealed that the Town Centre Management Company has received over £700,000 from Council in last three years:
