Linking with our Egyptian friends this week

Our Egyptian colleagues, Nadia, Ahmed and Tarek spent the week with us sampling many aspects of Redwood School! A busy schedule saw them take part in each of the key stage assemblies, watch a number of lessons, take part in visits to the Science Museum and Old Trafford, have meals prepared by pupils and staff, have a guided tour of Rochdale town hall and have discussions with school staff on many aspects of school. They returned to Alexandria on Saturday morning and we will be keep in regular contact via email, facebook and the school website in the coming months as we work towards our Year 1 Programme targets. Please see our website for more details.

Education, Health and Social Care Plans

Parents and carers will be aware that in the recent Green Paper published by the government, a focus on the consultation process with families on how parents, carers and young people are central to the assessment and service is prominent. Rochdale is a Pathfinder Authority and part of this work is to find out parents / carers views on the multi agency process. A series of meetings are being planned with Y9 parents / carers and the Feedback will go directly to the government via the local authority.

Riding

Birtle Riding Centre offer specialist riding sessions for children and adults with special needs. They currently have some Saturday afternoon sessions available. The sessions cost £12, are fortnightly and request that parent/ carers stay for the session (usually around an hour). Feedback from parents who have participated state improvements in communication and listening skills as well as physical development. The sessions are fun and enable participants to make new friends. For further details please contact Sally Ashworth at the centre on 0161 764 6573.

They performed using shadow puppets, signalong and a wheelchair dance to Circle of life from the Lion King as part of our African Arts topic.Keeping with our Egyptian friends theme — they toured the school on Monday morning and in the afternoon they visited Rochdale Football Club and were treated to a historic tour of the Town Hall.

Tuesday they visited the Science and Industry Museum in Manchester with a group of students from across all key stages, they looked at how Manchester used to be in Victorian times. They participated in hockey training at Cardinal Langely before experiencing Redwood Youth Club. The pupils are continuing the countdown to the arrival of the eggs, which we will all see hatching into... watch this space for further exciting developments!

The Lilac room went to take photos of tropical animals and plants for their rainforest topic. Year 7 Red have been learning about straight lines in Maths. They had fun watching Mr Hall demonstrate a straight line using a balloon on string going from one side of the classroom to the other. They made some beautiful straight line pictures using kitchen scourers! A mixed group went to the Trafford Centre to have a look round; the pupils enjoyed it in the Build a Bear factory playing with some of the Bears. Year 7 Red went to see an old fashioned ASDA ‘Todmorden Market’ they looked at the market to compare it to a modern day supermarket. They enjoyed good old fashioned chips from Grandma Pollards!

Key stage 4 News

In SEB this week we have been using the ipads. Jordan enjoyed making firework sounds and noises on one of the ‘apps’. Jack was really good at using the ipad. He found the games he wanted to play himself. The Animal Care group have been looking at...and touching Giant African Land Snails. The Bridger’s had a game of what am I? Each person had to guess what piece of equipment was written on to a post it note and stuck on their foreheads. It caused great frustration and hilarity all at the same time!

The Cook and Eat team made a meal for our Egyptian visitors. They made quiche and lemon cakes. Sid was kind enough to translate our menu so that the visitors knew what they were having. They really enjoyed it and the students worked extra hard!

6TH Form News

Our Egyptian colleagues, Nadia and Ahmed from the El Sadat school in Alexandria, Egypt, along with their translator Tarek, joined us in 6th Form for our weekly Achievement session. Our guests were presented with a welcome banner that the 6th Form Student Council members had made for them. Our guests were very impressed with how we celebrate student achievements and experiences. They commented on how lovely the atmosphere was here and how happy everyone was.

Jake K, Sandra, Dominic H, Rebecca and Fahad from the manufacturing group went to the Museum of Science and Industry in Manchester to look at a weaving exhibition, olden day Manchester exhibition and have a guided tour round the museum with our visitors from Egypt. The museum guide told us all about how small the houses were with lots of people living in them, and how they had no clean water or toilets. The students, visitors and staff thoroughly enjoyed the visit and our visitors had a great time looking at all the exhibitions. Sandra said she enjoyed the morning but she felt sorry for the poor people who had to live in such small houses. Well done to the Travel and Tourism group, who over the weeks have been working as part of a group to plan a visit to a local visitor attraction.

On Tuesday afternoon the group completed their final task by taking part in the visit to the Co-Op museum in Rochdale. Tom N, Joshua, Maria, Maddiya and Dominic H enjoyed a fantastic tour of the museum and had the opportunity to record a message of their visit on the interactive messaging system. The visit was a huge success and thoroughly enjoyed by all.
