Residents set to benefit from major electricity project

More than 15,000 residents are set to benefit from an £800k project to upgrade the local electricity network in Rochdale.

Electricity North West, the company that owns and maintains the regional power network, has started to put in place 2.3 kilometres of new improved underground cable between Castleton and Milnrow.

The ten-week project, which started on the 15 January, will enhance the power delivered to customers by replacing the cables which have been in place for more than 70 years, with new more reliable and efficient cables.

Tim Groom, major projects manager for Electricity North West, said: “This project is set to greatly benefit residents and businesses in Rochdale not just in the near future, but for many years to come.

“The ageing underground cables have been in place since the 1930s, so to ensure residents receive an efficient and reliable electricity supply they need, we’re replacing them with new improved cables.

“Unfortunately it’s not possible to work on underground cables without a little temporary disruption, but we have worked closely with the local council to keep any disruption to a minimum.”

There will be two temporary footpath closures for two weeks in Castleton, one at the end of Gypsy Lane and the other at the junction of Bow Street and Queensway.
