Masked robbers threaten woman with hammer

Date published: 23 January 2013

An off-licence worker locked herself in a back room when masked robbers threatened her with a hammer.

It happened at Bargain Booze at Lakeland Court, Wood Street, Middleton, at about 8.20pm on 10 January 2013.

Two robbers ran into the store and vaulted the security partition. The 22-year-old behind the counter ran into the back room, locking the door.

The thieves then helped themselves to cash from the till before running out.

No-one was hurt in the incident.

The offenders were both white, in their late teens or early 20s, about 5ft 5in tall and wore black balaclavas. One had a navy blue jacket while the other wore a khaki jacket.

Detective Constable Jason Ruff, of Rochdale CID, said: “Thankfully the shop assistant had the presence of mind to lock herself in the back room.

“It is clear therefore that the offenders are dangerous criminals with a propensity for violence and need to be caught.

"I would appeal to anyone who has information about this robbery to come forward.

"In particular, I want to hear from anyone who either witnessed the robbery itself."

Anyone with information is asked to call police on 0161 856 4646 or the independent charity Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.
