A more pedestrian friendly town centre
Date published: 16 January 2013
Plans to create a new cul-de-sac turnaround area, with loading facilities and a new taxi rank in the town centre have moved a step closer. Planning permission was granted in December for a scheme to widen River Street and Faulkner Street.
The scheme will facilitate two-way traffic and create a cul-de-sac with a new vehicle turn around area, improved loading facilities for the local businesses on Drake Street and a new taxi rank for seven vehicles.
The facility is located to the rear of lower Drake Street and will allow vehicle access down River Street from Water Street, turn around and then exit back onto Water Street. It forms part of a wider scheme to reduce through traffic and make the town centre more pedestrian and cycle friendly.
Work is expected to start on site in Spring 2013.
