Euro MPs cost three times as much as Westminster MPs
Date published: 12 January 2013
"The revelation that Euro MPs cost three times as much as Westminster MPs is to my mind another reason why Britain should leave the EU", says Philip Griffiths North West Chairman UK Independence Party.
"The appalling cost of running the European Parliament has been exposed in a written reply from the government to Lord Stoddart. This has revealed that the annual cost of an MP is £590,000, while an MEP hits the taxpayer to the tune of £1.79 million per year.
"The vast cost of the European Parliament, replete with trips to Strasbourg and translation into a smorgasbord of languages, ramps up the costs.
"Of course one might say that these differentials are right and proper. Given that three quarters of our laws are now made in Brussels, perhaps it is apt that MEPs get three times as much as our Westminster friends.
"Meanwhile UKIP MEPs are campaigning to make all British Euro-MPs a zero cost to the taxpayer by removing ourselves from the EU. And the latest revelation makes that all the more important."
