Island Crash - How well are they surviving?!

Date published: 10 January 2013

Year 7 learners at Matthew Moss High School have been having an interesting experience in their My World lessons. Two learners, Ebony Wild and Leah Harrison, describe their experiences below.

My World Island Crash
Over the past 2 months in My World we have been imagining we have crashed on an island near Fiji. We have done lots of things like written a diary entry of that day explaining how we feel and what happened whilst we were on the plane. Some of us put a message in a bottle so it would be like in the films when a message in a bottle washes up on a beach. We have built our shelters using tarpaulin and rope. We are now beginning to prepare for our first meal. As there is no cutlery on our island we have to make our own knives, forks and spoons out of natural materials we can find; like sticks and little pieces of foil that could have washed up on the island. We have even tried eating things like rice and beans with the cutlery we made.

Leah: My favourite part of this project was working together as a team in the shelter building challenge; even though our shelter wasn’t very good! I also enjoyed taking pictures of my message in a bottle with my friend for my scrap book. This has been a very good few months and I am looking forward to what’s to come.

Ebony: My favourite part of our project has been making cutlery because I enjoy making things and I like using my creativity skills. I made a knife and spoon using foil, twigs and wire which had miraculously washed up on the beach! It has been a good few months planning what our island is like and making a scrap book to record our thoughts and what has been happening.
