Co-operative boosts community cash for Rochdale

Date published: 21 December 2012

The Co-operative is celebrating a successful year for its Community Fund scheme, which has, this year, shared £60,000 between community groups and projects across the northern boroughs of Greater Manchester, including Rochdale.

The Community Fund is created by members of The Co-operative Group who elect to donate all, or part, of their twice-yearly dividend payments directly to the scheme. The funds are then shared with local groups and projects across the country.

Hazel Remeika, Regional Co-operative and Membership Manager for the North West and North Midlands said: “Our business is different. Because The Co-operative is owned by its members, they get a share in any of the profits we make. Members can choose to keep the cash or donate all, or part of their share, to local good causes. It’s a scheme we’re very proud of, not only because it gives us the chance to thank members for shopping with us, but because so many people do choose to give something back to the local community.

“This year’s fantastic total of £60,000 reflects the growth we are seeing in our membership levels. Over 140,000 people in the region carry a Co-operative Membership card because they support our values and recognise the good work we do in local communities.”

Rochdale groups that have this year benefitted from the Community Fund include K-Play in Kirkholt, Rochdale Walton Angling Society and Rochdale Hornets Rugby League Club.

A recent recipient of a Community Fund award was the town’s Sportsmanship and Social Development Enterprise. They received £490 towards the costs of running weekly sports sessions for local youngsters.

Co-operative members receive a payment twice a year based on the points they earn when they trade at any of the Group’s businesses, including The Co-operative Food, Pharmacy and Funeralcare branches, as well as The Co-operative Bank. Members can elect to give all, part, or just the odd pence from their dividend payments to the Community Fund.

The Community Fund offers grants of between £100 and £2,000 to community projects across the country. Awards are allocated based on a set of values and principles such as social responsibility and caring for others.

“Many community groups share the same values as The Co-operative and could benefit from an award and we would certainly welcome their applications,” said Hazel.

Community Fund application forms are available online at www.co-operative.coop/communityfund or by phoning 0844 262 4001.
