Breast is best says Trust

Pennine Care NHS Foundation Trust has been working in partnership with Children Centre staff and a team of parent volunteers to promote the benefits of breastfeeding to new mums across Rochdale.

The breastfeeding peer support programme, which has been running for 12 weeks between September and December, trains the mums and staff as volunteers who can then provide advice, support and guidance to other mums who want to learn more about breastfeeding.

The volunteer peer supporters meet women during their pregnancy and also following the birth of their babies, at community antenatal sessions, parent groups and Sure Start centres. One-to-one appointments can also be arranged if more practical support is needed.

Commenting on the success of the project, Val Rimmer, Infant Feeding Coordinator for Pennine Care said: “Many women don’t know anyone who has breastfed and therefore the prospect of trying it can be very daunting. All our trained volunteers have breastfed themselves so they are in an ideal position to talk first-hand about what it’s like. In addition, some women find it easier to discuss the subject with a peer rather than a health professional, so this makes the programme really effective.

“Our peer supporters provide a wide range of advice on how to breastfeed and highlight what is normal. They can also point those mums requiring specialist support and advice in the direction of the relevant health professionals.”

Breastfeeding is the healthiest way to feed babies as it not only gives them all the nutrients they need but also helps to build a strong physical and emotional bond with the mother. And it’s good for the mum too, as research has shown that it lowers the risk of breast and ovarian cancer and can help burn up to 500 calories a day.
