Distraction thefts from cash machines
Date published: 18 December 2012
Detectives have released CCTV footage and images of a gang of thieves who distracted an elderly couple at a cash point in a Manchester bank and stole money from them.
At about 4.25pm on Monday 10 December 2012, the couple were at the cash machine on Santander on Cross Street, when the group of four pounced just as the victims were entering their PIN.
Two of them approached the victims, saying that there had been a problem and claimed that the victims' card had been stuck.
One of them managed to get hold of the card, while the other man distracted them.
A third offender, a young woman, then came in to "offer help", while a fourth kept watch.
Each member of the gang entered the bank separately, within minutes of each other.
A short time later, several transactions were made at shops in the city.
Similar thefts took place at the Halifax at Piccadilly Gardens, and at the Nat West at Piccadilly Gardens.
Detective Constable Daniel Nowland said: "These are thieves who are deliberately targeting vulnerable people and trying to distract them en masse.
"The images we have released are very clear and I am confident that the offenders faces will be recognised by people they know.
"I urge them to come forward and help our investigation.
"Banks and retailers in the city have been alerted to this incident, and we continue to work closely with them.
"Especially at this time of year, when the streets of town and city centre are awash with Christmas shoppers, we urge people to be vigilant, particularly when they are making cash withdrawals."
Anyone with any information is asked to all police on 0161 856 3206 or call the independent charity Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
