MP visits postal workers for National Postal Workers Day

Date published: 17 December 2012

Simon Danzcuk MP joined the postal workers at the Rochdale Delivery Office to wish them well for Christmas and the New Year and to celebrate the first National Postal Workers Day with them.

This is the first-ever National Postal Workers Day, celebrating the hard work and dedication of hundreds of thousands of women and men who collect, sort and deliver letters, parcels and packets, including those working in post offices who collect and manage packets and parcels and many working behind the scenes to make the post a success for everyone across the UK, all year round.

The Communication Workers Union (CWU) is asking the public to show their support and appreciation, and hopes to make this an annual event.

Mr Danzcuk said:“I was delighted to receive the invitation to the Rochdale Delivery Office and to be able to join some of our postal workers on their first Postal Workers Day.

"I appreciate the dedication of the postal workers, who collect, sort and deliver mail and packets to every post-box in my constituency six days a week. This is underpinned by the Royal Mail having the ability at the moment to be able to deliver to every post-box in the UK for a standard price (1st or 2nd class stamp).

"As the MP for Rochdale I will be backing the campaign to protect the Universal Service Obligation”.

Saf Khan, Rochdale CWU representative, said: “Come rain or shine, sleet or snow the one thing you can count on is your post and packets being delivered six days a week to every letter box in the UK, for one standard price, regardless of how remote the addresses are, or the cost implications of delivering to them. This is the Universal Service Obligation (USO) that Royal Mail complies with.

Carl Webb, CWU North West Regional Secretary, said: "Across the North West, postal workers will be going that extra mile so all their customers, in spite of where they live, receive their Christmas post and parcels well in time for the festive break. On top of this they will ensure all business mail is delivered helping companies through this difficult time.”
