Adeleye found guilty of causing the death of three-week-old baby

Date published: 14 December 2012

A woman has been found guilty of causing the death of a Rochdale-born three-week old baby following a home circumcision.

Grace Adeleye (born 11/09/1945) of Sarnia Court, Salford was found guilty of manslaughter following trial at Manchester Crown Court, Crown Square.

She is due to be sentenced at a date which is yet to be confirmed.

Goodluck Caubergs was born on 22 March 2010 in Rochdale Infirmary.

On 16 April 2010, the parents of three and a half week old Goodluck had arranged for their son to be circumcised at their home in Chadderton by a nurse - Adeleye - who had been recommended by a friend.

Adeleye, who qualified as a nurse in Nigeria, arrived at the house in the early evening on 16 April 2010, where she carried out the circumcision using a pair of scissors. She then cleaned the affected area and bandaged the baby's penis, before putting a nappy on him.

Adeleye stayed for a short time after the procedure and was then paid £100 before she left.

Several hours later when Goodluck's parents changed his nappy, they noticed a large amount of blood. They phoned Adeleye, who reassured them and told them to re-dress the injury.

Goodluck's parents called an ambulance early the next morning at 7.30am on Saturday 17 April 2010 and the baby was taken to Royal Oldham Hospital, where he sadly died a short time later.

The pathologist who carried out the post-mortem examination concluded that Goodluck's cause of death was haemorrhage due to penile injury.
