Rochdale Drama students take a trip to a West Yorkshire Playhouse

Date published: 10 December 2012

As part of their studies, Rochdale Sixth Form College’s AS and A2 Drama and Theatre Studies students took a trip to the West Yorkshire Playhouse in Leeds to see a production of Frantic Assembly’s Beautiful Burnout.

Frantic Assembly is one of this country’s leading physical theatre companies and their unique physical style combines movement, design, music and text.

Beautiful Burnout was awarded a Scotsman Fringe First 2010 for innovation and outstanding new writing at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe and named one of the Observer's top 10 plays of that year. Bryony Lavery’s heart-wrenching and deeply human story follows five young fighters as they aim for the bright lights, far from Glasgow’s mean, grey streets.

Laura Ainscow, Teacher of Drama and Theatre Studies at Rochdale Sixth Form College said: “The AS students are evaluating this piece for their coursework and both year groups will use what they have learnt about physical theatre in their practical exams.

"As always our students were a pleasure to take on a trip, their behaviour was exceptional and they truly enjoyed the night, as did the members of staff involved.

"It was a lovely surprise to see two ex-RSFC Drama and Theatre Studies (Paula Lyons and Mudassar Mahmood) students at the performance, who enjoyed last years show so much, that they wanted to see this new piece.”
