Falinge youth poets perform at Touchstones

Date published: 07 December 2012

A group of young people from Falinge showcased the creative work they have been doing with local participatory arts organisation Cartwheel Arts at Touchstones.

The project is part of Cartwheel Arts’s creative writing strand, Tell Us Another One, which aims to bring new approaches to creative writing to adults and young people all around Greater Manchester.

The young participants, aged from 6 to 16, worked with MCs and poets from In The Loop to write their own lyrics and poetry and develop their performance skills. Many of the young people took the traditional limerick form, and updated it with beatbox-style performance. The group also worked with visual artist Jo Gornall to produce artwork which has been made into a beautiful celebration calendar for 2013.

Thursday’s public performance drew a crowd of local poetry enthusiasts, and also welcomed the Mayor and Mayoress of Rochdale, Cllrs James and Jane Gartside. The audience enjoyed the different styles of the young poets, including this limerick from 10-year-old Miradi Mulumba:

There once was a guy from Orion
Who possessed the power of flying
He met a girl in the park
Who broke his heart
Now he sits in the corner crying!
