Man taken to hospital after a house fire

Date published: 06 December 2012

Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service (GMFRS) is reminding people of the importance of having working smoke alarms, after an alarm fitted by the Service sounded during a Rochdale house fire.

GMFRS’ Control Room received a call at 3.40pm on Wednesday, December 5, to report the fire involving the kitchen of a house on Heywood Road in the Castleton area of Rochdale.

Red Watch firefighters from Rochdale Fire Station went to the detached house – where they found heavy smoke logging on the first floor and a man suffering from the effects of smoke.

Watch Manager Tom Hague said: “The fire was out when we arrived but had started accidentally when the cooker had been switched on with a box of laundry on top.

“A 27-year-old man was suffering from the effects of smoke and given oxygen by a trauma technician, before an ambulance took him to hospital.

“This incident shows how important it is to have a working smoke alarm.”

The fire caused damage to around 20 per cent of the kitchen.
