Its never too late to learn and celebrate diversity

Date published: 09 May 2012

Adult daycare users and carers from Rochdale Carers Resource Centre and Apna Ghar came together at Kashmir Youth Project (KYP) Belfield Road, Rochdale to continue the theme of celebration and increasing understanding in cohesion and diversity.

Samina Nadeem, Apna Ghar (Daycare) Manager, was thrilled with the turnout. She said: “The support from Rochdale MBC Carers Resource Centre and the interest from day care users and carers was amazing. Everyone involved enjoyed the event, learnt new things and made new friends. This was mainly down to the excellent organisation of the day by care staff at both RMBC Carers Resource Centre and KYP.

"We also undertook some consultation to establish what more can be done to support day care users and improve their well-being and independence. This will be used to support further project activity.

"Many of the day care users and carers left very positive comments. One of the comments was from Naseem Begum who said that “Before coming here (Apna Ghar Centre) I didn’t know this building existed. The facilities are amazing and we should have more events like these.”

Karen Youngblunt, Rochdale Carers Resource Centre coordinator, said: “This is a fantantastic event. Although there are cultural differences, we all have a common role, that of a carer. My group has expressed a desire that we should all meet up again”

KYP’s Chief Executive Abdul Hamied said: “this cohesion event builds on the successful under 5s nursery cohesion event and was specifically arranged to bring adult day care users at both KYP’s Apna Ghar and Rochdale Council's Carers Resource Centre together to promote interaction, develop links and to celebrate diversity. At KYP we believe that it’s never too late to learn and improve our skills and understanding.

"People enjoyed the event so much that the day-care users and staff at both centers are now working together to arrange a follow-up event.”
