Four Rochdale men who attacked another man have been sentenced.

Iftikhar Syed, 22, of Ellesmere Street, Rochdale was sentenced to 12 months for violent disorder at Bolton Crown Court today, (Monday 27 June 2011).

Omar Syed Iqbal, 18, of Ellesmere Street, Rochdale was sentenced to six years and three months for possessing an offensive weapon and section 18 assault at a previous hearing.

Tanveer Syed Iqbal, 30, of Ellesmere Street, Rochdale was sentenced to 14 months for violent disorder at a previous hearing.

Mohammed Usman Raja, 22, of Freetrade Street, Rochdale was sentenced to 14 months for violent disorder at a previous hearing.

At 6.00pm on Friday 23 July 2010, the 26-year-old victim was leaving his home with his sister on Sussex Street, Rochdale when he recognised Omar Syed Iqbal was parked in a car opposite the house, staring at them. He believed he was staring at his sister and asked him what he was looking at before the car drove off.

Later that day, the victim received a phone call from Omar Syed Iqbal saying they should meet and talk about what had happened. The victim agreed and said they should meet at Broadfield Park.

At around 8.00pm, the victim, his brother and friend drove to the park and met Mohammed Usman Raja and the three Iqbal brothers

Iftikhar Syed and Tanveer Syed Iqbal punched the victim in the face and Omar Syed Iqbal held a machete. The victim ran off but tripped and fell. He was punched and kicked before he was hit over the head with the machete, knocking him unconscious.

The victim suffered swelling to his right eye, a 4 inch cut to the right side of his head and a 2 inch cut to the top of his head.

Omar Iqbal, Iftikhar Syed and Tanveer Iqbal were arrested at home in July 2010. Mohammed Usman Raja was arrested in September 2010.

Detective Constable Michael Berger from Rochdale CID said: “This was a violent attack and the victim is lucky his wounds were not more serious. He agreed to meet with Omar Syed Iqbal thinking they would talk about what had happened earlier and did not expect to leave the park with the injuries he received.”
