Littleborough Lions mark World Sight Day

Date published: 18 October 2010

Members of the Littleborough and District Lions club marked World Sight Day by blindfolding two of their members and escorting them round the village for two hours.

One of the members also wore a sandwich board which explained about World Sight Day and the Lions Clubs International involvement in preventing avoidable blindness within the shores of our own country and in third world countries.

In the two hours, over 100 pairs of used spectacles were handed to the Lions to re-use in the third world countries.

The Lions Clubs throughout the UK and in other developed countries collect and send these used spectacles to Lions run sorting and grading depots where they are categorised according to their prescription.

They are then sent on to distribution depots in the third world country where volunteer Opticians match appropriate spectacles to suitable recipients. These spectacles, with the improvement in eyesight that they bring, will enable the recipients to continue supporting their families.

The members of the Littleborough and District Lions Club would like to say “Thank you” for the generosity shown by the Littleborough people during this event.
