We need 20mph speed limit outside all our schools, says Labour Leader
Date published: 13 October 2010
The Leader of the Labour Party has renewed the campaign for a 20mph speed limit outside all Rochdale schools.
Councillor Colin Lambert has demanded to know when Rochdale Council is going to implement the policy which was approved at Full Council in December 2009.
Councillor Lambert said: “If the council is saying it will take too long to get all the statutory notices through the legal procedures, then it should now be implementing advisory notices outside each school whilst the legal work is undertaken.
“In addition the parents and visitors must also play their part when taking children to school.
“The yellow lines at our schools and the yellow zig zag markings are there to protect all children and must be kept clear. It is not excusable for one parent to feel they can break the law.
“One thoughtless driver is enough to cause an accident.
“This also applies to taxi drivers and delivery vehicles.
“Please consider children first.”
Councillor Lambert was informed by the Cabinet member for Highways and Transport that 41 out of 83 schools have had the speed limit reduced.
Signs reading: “Kill your speed not a child” are also available.
