Hopwood Hall College has been awarded a £1,000 Special Merit Award in this year’s Rolls Royce Science Prize.
The Rolls Royce Science Prize is part of the company’s ongoing drive to promote science and engineering in schools by encouraging and rewarding inspirational science teaching. Each year, the company awards a total of £120,000 in cash prizes to schools that enter the competition through the Science Learning Centre network.
Over 2000 schools and colleges entered the competition and the College was one of just 50 to receive the Special Merit Award. The £1000 that Hopwood Hall College has won is to be used to help develop science teaching.
Becki Lee, a tutor from the Hair and Beauty department put forward an innovative proposal to develop science within the hair and beauty courses by creating a science lab and virtual learning environment for students.
Ms Lee is delighted with the win, she said: “We are successfully delivering the Diploma in Hair and Beauty studies in local high schools. This new course provides learners with the opportunity to achieve and succeed in areas such as science as it is contextualised to their interests. The innovative structure of the course allows the learners explore the industry whilst embedding the importance of science.
“This prize will enable us to develop the science element even more, helping us to provide an accessible, exciting and inspirational way of bringing learning to life-we cannot wait to get on with it.”
