Lib Dems honour Rochdale businessman

Date published: 02 October 2010

Local businessman and President of Rochdale Liberal Democrats, Ali Asghar, has received the highest national party award for his outstanding services to the Lib Dems and the community in Rochdale.

Mr Asghar has been a member of the Liberal Democrats for over 40 years and was part of Sir Cyril Smith’s famous by-election winning team in 1972. He was crowned President of the local party back in 2007 after he was again rewarded with a special recognition award for his services by the then national party president, Simon Hughes MP.

Mr Asghar received his latest award during the recent Liberal Democrat conference in Liverpool where hundreds of party delegates turned out to show their appreciation for his hard work. The award was given to him by Baroness Ros Scott, the current national Lib Dem president.

Mr Asghar said: “I did not enter politics to receive awards but I am delighted to have worked alongside great local politicians such as Sir Cyril Smith, Liz Lynne and Paul Rowen. Since arriving to Britain I have always found that this party to have a special relationship with the Kashmiri population and also the wider Asian population in Rochdale. I promise to carry on working hard for the party I love along with every part of the Rochdale community.”

Rochdale’s Mayor, Councillor Zulfiqar Ali, who was there to see Mr Asghar collect his award, said: “Ali has been involved in the party throughout my time in politics. He has been not only a great asset but a great friend. It’s encouraging to see our national party recognising the achievements of local party members, especially those from different ethnic backgrounds.”

Rochdale Liberal Democrats Deputy Leader, Councillor Dale Mulgrew, said: “This award recognises not only Ali’s dedication and commitment to the Liberal Democrats but also his work for the community here in Rochdale. Over the years Ali has been involved in many aspects of our community from promoting community cohesion to helping sponsor events for local youngsters. He is a true community hero.”
