Date published: 11 September 2010

A Rochdale family luckily escaped a fire at their home in Castleton.

At 00.13am fire fighters from Heywood Fire Station were called to a fire on Rodney Street. On arriving at the scene the fire crews were confronted by a rapidly developing fire in a back living room with smoke filling the end terraced property.

Prior to the arrival of the fire service a male adult led his wife and granddaughter to safety, however the two adults believed to be in their 60's suffered smoke inhalation with the male adult also suffering burns to his head and hands.

The two adults along with their grand daughter were taken to Fairfield hospital by ambulance personnel.

Four firefighters wearing breathing apparatus entered the house and quickly brought the fire under control using two hosereel jets, however, there was severe fire damage to the back living room area and smoke damage to several other rooms in the terraced property.

The house was fitted with a working smoke alarm and it was this that raised the alarm and enabled the family to escape the blaze.

The cause of the fire is currently under investigation however, it is believed to have started accidentally.
