Downpour won’t dampen charity spirit

Cricket players from teams across the borough supporting Help for Heroes

Middleton Cricket Club played host to a charity cricket game this evening (Friday 30 July 2010) to raise money for charity.

Professional players from all over the world who are spending this season with clubs in the borough joined together for a Twenty20 match against local amateur cricket players.

The game was organised by ex-serviceman and Middleton Cricket Club Member, Peter Davey, to raise money for the Help for Heroes Charity.

Unfortunately the rain intervened and the game was called off over fears the ground would be too wet and could be dangerous for the players.

However, keen sports fans and charity supporters flooded through the gates to enjoy the rest of the evening.

Middleton band, ‘Random Harvest’ provided the entertainment and the supporters will be treated to a potato pie supper and firework display as the night goes on.

Organiser Peter Davey said:  “I am a retired Royal Marine and I just thought one day whilst I was sat at home, a lot of people are doing things for Help the Heroes and it’s about time I did something too.

“Holding a charity cricket game was a natural progression really. We have players who have given up their time on a Friday night to take part and it is such a shame that the weather has gone and done this.

“We have collected in excess of £1,000 through ticket and Chinese lantern sales. We had hoped we would get more people through the gate but that is unlikely now.”

Mr Davey added: “My personal thanks go to everybody who has assisted me in getting this event off the ground, in particular Clinton Perron, the professional player at Littleborough Cricket Club who has given me a lot of help.”

Unfortunately the club isn’t in a position to reschedule the game as the ground availability and player availability is difficult to manage.
