Profile of the new Mayor - Councillor Jean Hornby

Date published: 19 May 2006

Jean Gladys Hornby was born in 1942 at 45, Green Lane, Middleton, where she grew up. Jean attended Boarshaw Primary School and Moorclose Secondary School, were she became a prefect and then Head Girl, prior to leaving in 1957. She started work at Ciba-Gigy three weeks before her 15th birthday.

Jean continued to live at Green Lane until her marriage to Barrie in 1963, when they then moved to Castleton where they have lived ever since. They have one daughter, one son and one grand-daughter.

Jean has almost always worked since leaving school – either full time or part time – with jobs ranging from clerk to cleaner to cashier to head cashier to buyer. She has also been an active Trade Union Member since the mid 1970’s, and has been involved in politics since the early 1980’s.

Jean’s family has always been of paramount importance, so planning and enjoying family holidays – usually twice a year – and activities centred around her children have always been her main hobby, although she always enjoyed reading and doing her crossword puzzles. She has also always liked “proper” music, since she was a little girl listening to the Light Programme and Family Favourites on the wireless! She has over recent years developed a keen interest in opera and tries to attend performances six or seven times a year. Jean also enjoys going to the Curtain Theatre, to concerts and amateur dramatic productions. She is a member of St. Aiden’s Church, whose choir she also enjoys listening to!

Her favourite hobby, however, is spending time with her grand-daughter.
